Recently the Province announced some changes to gathering sizes for indoor and outdoor events.  We have been in contact with the Province in order to get some clarification on the changes that came into effect on July 3, 2020.

The current NS Sport Guidelines for sport activities, such as practices and games remain in place. This means that there can be a maximum of 50 participants on a field of play, socially distanced, if the facility space allows, or there can be groups of 10 participants who are not distancing, provided each group is distanced from the other, again to a total of 50 participants.  As per previous communications, it is recommended that each group of 10 remains the same as much as possible.

As of July 3, facilities that are registered businesses or organizations that are hosting amateur sporting events and competitions will be subject to the recently announced gathering limits of up to 250 people socially distanced for outdoor events, and up to 50% capacity to a limit of 200 people for indoor events.  It is important to note that this applies only to facilities hosting events that are registered businesses or organizations, and the NS Sport Guidelines remain in effect for the field of play for each host facility.  Please note that the up to 50 individuals involved in the field of play are part of the overall gathering numbers (up to 200 indoors or 250 outdoors).

Return to Sport Update

The Province of Nova Scotia now allows groups of up to 50 people to gather while social distancing, and groups of 10 will be allowed to gather without social distancing. This means that sport organizations can now run programs with 50 people who are socially distant, or divide into smaller groups of 10 without distancing. Contact will be allowed within groups of 10. 

It is encouraged that groups of 10 (total participants) remain consistent as much as possible. It is up to the organization in how to interpret this and implement it with the membership’s health and well-being in mind.  It is also encouraged that coaches stay with their designated training group for the duration of a session. It is ultimately up to the organization how the interpret this information, and implement it with the health and well-being of their membership in mind. As best practice, we recommend that groups of ten who are not social distancing stay together as much as possible.

All provincial sport organization return to activity plans must adhere to the Nova Scotia Sport Guidelines. The provincial sport organizations who have already had their return to activity plans reviewed can be found here. Provincial sport organizations can apply these new guidelines to their plans, but they are not required to re-submit new plans for review. However, if provincial sport organizations would like to re-submit, they are welcome to do so.

We strongly recommend that each provincial sport organization prepare a plan to practice due diligence to ensure a safe return for all participants. We are working with the Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage to see that submitted plans are reviewed and relevant feedback is provided in a timely manner. Sport Nova Scotia Update: COVID-19

In response to the COVID-19 cases in the province, Sport Nova Scotia has adapted based on the recommendations from the Province of Nova Scotia. The health of our staff and stakeholders is of the upmost importance to us, and we hope to reschedule our events when it is safe to do so.

  • Sport Nova Scotia staff will work from home effective Monday, March 16, 2020 until further notice. Sport Nova Scotia and provincial sport organization staff will still have access to the building via key card if needed.  
  • If you need to get in touch with a provincial sport organization, please contact them directly. Here is the directory for each sport.
  • The IG Wealth Management Ceilidh & Casino event scheduled for April 4, 2020 has been postponed. The event will be rescheduled, and we will post updates as we have them. If you have already purchased tickets and you are looking for a refund, please contact Nick McBride at  
  • The Sport Nova Scotia Education Sessions scheduled for Wednesday, March 18 and Wednesday, April 1 are now cancelled.
  • Sport Nova Scotia has made the decision to cancel our spring Milk Sport Fair event that was scheduled to take place at St. Francis Xavier University on May 7 and 8. The health of our staff and stakeholders is of the highest importance to us, and we hope to reschedule our events when it is safe to do so.   • We have made the decision to postpone the 2020 Support4Sport Awards that were scheduled for June 6. We are considering rescheduling the event as well as brainstorming creative ways to safely celebrate the achievements of the Nova Scotian sport community and we will post updates as we have them.
