Sport Fund Recipient Spotlight: Halifax Dunbrack Soccer Club

Halifax Dunbrack Soccer Club resides in Mainland North, home to many newcomers and one of the fastest growing and most ethnically diverse communities in Nova Scotia. Adrian Oncel, vice president of Halifax Dunbrack Soccer Club and former newcomer knew the barriers to play and coach soccer in a new country from first-hand experience.

Adrian knows transition to life in Nova Scotia can be eased with the support of sport, “Sport activities are an important piece of our individual wellbeing especially in the stressful times of new beginnings” said Adrian

Halifax Dunbrack Soccer Club supports these new beginnings with the Soccer for Life for Newcomers program. With the help of Sport Fund, the club now has the facilities and equipment to provide mentorship for newcomer coaches who lead children's soccer programs.

“I would like to thank Sport Nova Scotia for the support on starting such an amazing program” said Adrian. “The program allowed the new assistant coaches to gain experience and confidence in coaching children in Canada and working knowledge on soccer practice structure and content.”

The partnership between Halifax Dunbrack Soccer Club and Sport Fund opens opportunities to newcomers including, coach development, potential coaching positions, and playing opportunities for the whole family.
