Monica Harlow, David Sharpe, Ian Melanson, and the DCSC Men’s Relay Team named Sport Chek Athletes and Team of the Month for July
HALIFAX, NS (Monday, Aug 29, 2011) – The award for Sport Chek Female Individual Athlete of the Month goes to 19-year-old rope skipper Monica Harlow from Porter’s Lake, NS. Monica placed second out of 17 athletes in the 30 Second Speed event at the CRSF National Championships with an impressive 176 skips.

David Sharpe clinches July’s title of Sport Chek Male Individual Athlete of the Month. The 20-year-old swimming placed third in the 200m Butterfly event at Summer Nationals, earning him an invitation to compete in the Nation’s Cup (a senior national team selected international event) where he placed second and set a new Nova Scotia provincial record in the 200m Butterfly event.

The Sport Chek Male Team Athlete of the Month award goes to 16-year-old Ian Melanson. Ian greatly contributed to his flag football team’s gold medal at the Flag Football U16&U18 Ntional Championships. His efforts did not go unnoticed. Ian also won the award for offensive MVP of the tournament in the U18 male division.

Consisting of Mike Adams, Liam Berrigan, Sean Berrigan, and Mohamed El-Dah, the DCSC Men’s Relay swim team has earned the Sport Check Team of the Month award. The team placed first in the 800m Freestyle Relay event in the senior men’s age group. In doing so, they also broke the Nova Scotia provincial record that has been held for over 20 years.

The Athlete of the Month program is administered by Sport Nova Scotia, whose members are eligible to nominate athletes for the awards. A membership committee selects the award recipients for five possible categories: Male Individual Athlete, Female Individual Athlete, Male Team Athlete, Female Team Athlete, and Team.
