Cleve’s Source for Sports Athlete of the Month February 2023

Monday, February 13, 2023- Halifax, NS – Cleve’s Source for Sports Athlete of the Month Recipients Announced 

Sport Nova Scotia is proud to announce the February 2023 Cleve’s Source for Sports Athlete of the Month recipients; Raya Porter (Jr. Female), Malcolm Farris (Jr. Male), Nicholas Gentleman (Sr. Male) and Violet Singh & Sean Mabe (Team of the Month). 

Raya Porter: 12-year-old Taekwondo athlete from Wellington. 

Recent achievements: Raya gained a gold medal and national champion status after competing at the Taekwondo Canadian Nationals in the division of –37kg (12-14 years old). She finished with a personal best, winning all three matches 2-0. Raya qualified for Team Canada and will travel to Peru in October to compete at the Pan American Championships  

Malcolm Farris: 16-year-old freestyle skier from Brookfield.  

Recent achievements: Last month, Malcolm competed nationally at the Sun Peaks Canada Cup and internationally at the Calgary Nor-Am. Skiing at the Sun Peaks Canada Cup Malcolm captured gold in big air barrier and silver in slopestyle. His results qualified him to compete at the Calgary Nor-Am where he placed 26th overall.  

Nicholas Gentleman: 20-year-old goalball athlete from Halifax. 

Recent achievements: In late January, Nicholas competed internationally with Team Nova Scotia at the Montreal Invitational Goalball Tournament. Nova Scotia finished with silver after being undefeated in the round-robin, quarter-finals, and semifinals. Nicholas scored 9 goals for the team and was the only player to play all six games of the tournament.  

Team of the Month: Figure skating pair, Violet Singh (11 years old) & Sean Mabe (15 years old). 

Recent achievements: In January, figure skating duo Violet and Sean finished seventh in the pre-novice pair category at the Skate Canada Challenge competition in Regina, Sk. 

Quick Facts: Athlete of the Month 

•The Athlete of the Month program is administered by Sport Nova Scotia, whose members are eligible to nominate athletes for the awards.  

•A membership committee selects the award recipients for five possible categories: Male Individual Athlete, Female Individual Athlete, Male Team Athlete, Female Team Athlete, and Team.
