Introducing a Unified Vision: Team Nova Scotia’s New Logo We are proud to unveil the new Team Nova Scotia logo, a powerful symbol of unity and collaboration within our sport community. This logo reflects the partnership between Team Nova Scotia and Mi’kmaq Team Nova Scotia, showcasing our collective commitment to inclusion, reconciliation, and a bright future for sport in the province.
The logo features two eagle feathers, a symbol of great honour in Indigenous culture, representing significant accomplishment. As Tex Marshall, Manager of Mikmaw Sport with Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey, explains: “In Indigenous culture, presenting someone with an eagle feather signifies the highest honour—it’s given to those who accomplish great things. A good friend of mine from Alberta presented me with an eagle feather when we hosted NAIG (North American Indigenous Games) in Kjipuktuk (Halifax), and it was incredibly touching and impactful for me. We’re taught humility and don’t seek praise, but it’s also important to recognize an individual’s accomplishments.
In the Team Nova Scotia logo, the two eagle feathers represent our Nova Scotia Canada Games team and NAIG team—Team Mi’kmaw Nova Scotia, symbolizing our partnership and collaboration moving forward. This has been in the works for quite some time, and I know all of our athletes will be very proud to wear this logo. It’s something truly unique—this kind of partnership doesn’t exist anywhere else in Canada—and it sets the course for a bright future for our young people. I’m honoured to be part of this amazing initiative.”
Maddie McDonald, Canada Games 2025 Team NS Mission Staff Alternate and NAIG 2023 Venue and Sport Coordinator, also sees the logo as a milestone for unity: “I think the collaboration side is—well, it’s due time. It’s awesome that we’re encompassing everyone now. It’s truly one big team, and it’s not Team Mi’kmaq Nova Scotia and Team Nova Scotia anymore. It’s two and the same, working together and coming together as one, as it should have been. I think it’s going to be exciting for the athletes to have that, and I really hope this is a great first step toward meaningful reconciliation.”
Joshua Nicholas, who will serve as mission staff for Team NS and previously for NAIG, adds: “To share the same symbol on our chests and in our hearts is such a great step forward. Before, it felt very separated, but now as Nova Scotians, we are united. The two eagle feathers on our Canada Games and NAIG teams bring a lot of joy to my heart and symbolize a huge step forward for all of us.”
The new logo is more than just a design—it’s a symbol of pride, unity, and a shared vision for the future. This logo represents a positive change in collaboration, and this moment must lead to an ongoing, meaningful connection with the Indigenous community. It reflects the strength of our diverse community and ensures that all athletes, whether at the Canada Games or NAIG, can see themselves under one unified Team Nova Scotia banner.
