September 29, 2025 (Halifax, NS) – Sport Nova Scotia is proud to announce that the September Cleve’s Source for Sports Impact Award recipients are Laura Eisenhauer and Freida Smith (Female Athlete), Nic Blois (Male Athlete), Terry Sweeney (Coach) and Matt MacKenzie (Volunteer).
Female Athlete: Laura Eisenhauer and Freida Smith, Sailing
Achievements: Laura and Freida captured the gold medal at the 2025 Canada Games in the female 29er class. One week later, the duo captured the overall title at the 29er National Championships in Kingston, Ontario. As a result, they are now qualified to represent Canada at the 2025 World Youth Sailing Championships in December.
Male Athlete: Nic Blois, Athletics
Achievements: A Nova Scotia Legion Team athlete, Nic earned a gold medal in the U16 hammer throw at the Youth Nationals in Calgary. This was only one of two gold medals won for Nova Scotia at this competition. Nic is also well known for his sportsmanship, dedication and encouraging spirit.
Coach: Terry Sweeny, Athletics
Achievements: Terry has demonstrated outstanding leadership and commitment to the development of athletes in Nova Scotia through his extensive coaching background, most recently in track and field. In 2023, alongside his daughter, he founded GRIT Athletics, which has grown from just four athletes to more than 200 members in only two summers.
In August 2025, he was named head coach of the U16/U18 Team NS/NU Legion Provincial Team, which travelled to Calgary for the National Championships. Additionally, just one week prior to the Legion Championships, he coached his daughter at the Canadian Championships, guiding her to two senior national finals in long jump and triple jump.
Volunteer: Matt MacKenzie, Weightlifting
Achievements: Matt has been dedicating his Friday evenings, volunteering between two and four hours each week, to coach a group of female athletes at Kaos CrossFit. His motivation comes purely from his love of the sport and his commitment has been instrumental in building a thriving and supportive weightlifting community.
The group he coaches has been growing rapidly, which is a direct reflection of the positive environment he fosters. Matt’s dedication has not only advanced the technical skills of his athletes but has also cultivated an atmosphere of fun, camaraderie and empowerment. His passion for Olympic Weightlifting shines through in every session, leaving a lasting impact on the athletes he mentors and the broader community.
