Breaking Barriers and Building Strength: Pictou County Gymnastics Club

When considering ways to stay active as we age, gymnastics doesn’t often spring to mind. The Pictou County Gymnastics Club is changing that narrative. Eleven years ago, the club introduced inclusive equipment because they could see how it supported movement safely for those participating.

As the club began incorporating the equipment, it became clear that it would help people of all ages and abilities. It has led to a Retired Living Class and has given the club the capacity to create programming to include athletes with disabilities.

“We’ve heard feedback from the community on how special it was to have these opportunities,” said Wendy Cruickshank, manager of Pictou County Gymnastics Club. “It has helped those from the seniors program build strength and positive body awareness, as well as prevent falls.”

Through funding from Sport Nova Scotia’s Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Accessibility fund, the club has added firmer boxes, lighter weights and more exercise aids. These pieces of equipment assist in exercises that increase movement, strength, and flexibility, all while helping with balance among those participating. The Retired Living Class can break barriers and move toward inclusive programming so that those with disabilities are able to participate in club classes.

While it has taken some time to spread the word about accessibility opportunities, the community is incredibly supportive of the club. The community participates in the fundraisers and plays a key role in ensuring everyone feels included.

“There is no age limit for the programming for persons with disabilities,” said Cruickshanks. “It’s for those 55+ for the Retired Living Class.”
