Cleve’s Source for Sport Athlete of the Month September 2023

September 25, 2023 (Halifax, NS)- Cleve’s Source for Sports September Athlete of the Month Recipients Announced    

Sport Nova Scotia is proud to announce the September 2023 Cleve’s Source for Sports Athlete of the Month recipients; Emmi German (Jr. Female), Sullivan Nakatsu (Jr. Male), Scott Lutes (Sr. Male), and Ryan Santimaw and Ella Kanellakos (Team of the Month).  

Emmi German: 15-year-old Karate athlete from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia  

Recent Achievements: Emmi recently won silver in the Cadet Kumite (Sparring) -54Kg division at the Pan American Junior, Cadet & U21 Championships in Chile last month. She qualified for the competition by winning silver at the Karate Canada Nationals in July 2023. Emmi was one of two athletes representing Canada in her division at the competition, where her silver medal is the best result ever for a Nova Scotian athlete.  

Sullivan Nakatsu: 17-year-old Sailing athlete from Hammonds Plains, Nova Scotia 

Recent Achievements: Sullivan won gold at the Sailing Canada Youth National Championships last month in Kingston, Ontario, where 148 of the best sailors in the country gathered to compete. As a result of his win, Sullivan qualified to represent Canada at the 2023 Youth World Sailing Championships this December in Brazil. Sullivan adds this accomplishment to his many others, including silver in last year’s Canada Games. 

Scott Lutes: 61-year-old Para Sailing athlete from Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia 

Recent Achievements: As part of a two-person sailing team, Scott finished third overall in the RS Venture Connect class last month at the 2023 Sailing World Championships in the Netherlands. Scott continues to add to his impressive accolades, where he is a multi-medal winner at the Paralympic Games and World Championships. 

Sailing, Team Santimaw and Kanellakos 

Recent Achievements: Ryan and Ella were crowned National Female Youth Champions in the Club 420 class at the Sail Canada Youth Nationals last month in Kingston, Ontario. The two were the top Canadian Female Youth Team, placing fifth in in the 79-boat event, with 158 athletes at the competition.

• The Athlete of the Month program is administered by Sport Nova Scotia, whose members are eligible to nominate athletes for the awards.  

• A membership committee selects the award recipients for five possible categories: Male Individual Athlete, Female Individual Athlete, Male Team Athlete, Female Team Athlete, and Team.
