Tuesday, January 17, 2023- Halifax, NS – Cleve’s Source for Sports Athlete of the Month Recipients Announced
Sport Nova Scotia is proud to announce the January 2023 Cleve’s Source for Sports Athlete of the Month recipients; Team Canada (Team of the Month), Mason Smith (Sr. Male), Milo Sircom Brown (Jr. Male).
Team of the Month: Team Canada – Deschenes rink from the Halifax Curling Club. Coach, Mary Mattatall, lead Cate Fitzgerald, second Alison Umlah, third Lauren Ferguson and skip Emily Deschenes.
Recent achievements: Led by coach Mary Mattatall, Team Canada travelled to Finland in late December to compete in the under 21 world junior women’s curling qualifier. Team Canada captured gold and will advance to the World Junior Curling Championships 2023 in Fussen, Germany next month.
Mason Smith: 23-year-old goalball player from Middleton.
Recent achievements: In December, Mason competed in the IBSA Goalball World Championships 2022 in Matosinhos, Portugal. Mason scored at least one goal in all Canada’s seven games, totalling 14 goals in the tournament. In the final game, Mason was instrumental in Canada’s 9-8 victory over Japan. He blocked three penalty shots, scored four goals, and made a number of blocks in his wing.
Milo Sircom Brown: 17-year-old cross county skier from Greenwich.
Recent achievements: In December, Milo competed at the Eastern Canada Cup. In the under-18 male sprint events, Milo placed third in the qualifying round and finished seventh place in the semi-finals. In the under-18 male 6.6km free technique event, Milo finished fifth with a time of 16:02, only 17 seconds off the podium and 29 seconds behind the winner.

•The Athlete of the Month program is administered by Sport Nova Scotia, whose members are eligible to nominate athletes for the awards.
•A membership committee selects the award recipients for five possible categories: Male Individual Athlete, Female Individual Athlete, Male Team Athlete, Female Team Athlete, and Team.
