Cleve’s Source for Sports Athlete of the Month May 2023

May 25, 2023 (Halifax, NS)- Cleve’s Source for Sports April Athlete of the Month Recipients Announced  

Sport Nova Scotia is proud to announce the May 2023 Cleve’s Source for Sports Athlete of the Month recipients; Peyton Berry (Jr. Female), and Edward Laba (Jr. Male), and Sean O’Neil (Sr. Male). 

Peyton Berry: 11-year-old Brazilian jiu jitsu athlete from Greenfield, Nova Scotia. 

Recent Achievements: Peyton recently won gold at the Nova Scotia Challenge 2023 in the Gi division and No Gi division. She has been competing monthly, where she has taken gold in her last three tournaments. Peyton is a very focused athlete and continues to be a great role model for the other students on the team. 

Edward Laba: 18-year-old goalball athlete from Halifax, Nova Scotia

Recent Achievements: Edward and his team the Nova Scotia Highlanders won the gold medal at the Ontario Provincial Goalball Tournament, last month. He played an important role in ensuring his team made it to the finals, scoring 12 goals for his team and playing strong defense. He not only scored 12 goals for his team, but scored the go-ahead goal in the finals while being an unwavering defensive presence. 

Sean O’Neil: 27-year-old karate athlete from Halifax, Nova Scotia. 

Recent Achievements: Sean recently won silver at the North American Cup in the -84Kg division, an annual event where the top two competitors per division from Canada, the USA and Mexico compete. Sean is currently the top ranked athlete in his division for Karate Canada, which is based on his previous National gold medal.

• The Athlete of the Month program is administered by Sport Nova Scotia, whose members are eligible to nominate athletes for the awards. 

• A membership committee selects the award recipients for five possible categories: Male Individual Athlete, Female Individual Athlete, Male Team Athlete, Female Team Athlete, and Team.
